DVLA Reveals List of Banned ‘24’ Series Number Plates for Being Inappropriate

The list of number plates prohibited by the DVLA for the year 2024 has been disclosed, featuring plates such as *W24 NKR, SL24 GSS, and SH24 GED for their offensive content.

The transition to new vehicle registrations in March and September introduces ‘24’ for vehicles registered post-March 1, and ‘74’ after September 1. The sheer volume of plates generated with each new series means that some inadvertently spell out words that are deemed rude or unsavoury.

The DVLA rigorously screens all forthcoming number plates to eliminate any that might be seen as offensive from being issued.

Tony Clark, a specialist in number plates and Marketing Manager at Plates4Less, utilised a Freedom of Information request to unveil the plates considered ‘Too Rude for the Road’ by the DVLA for the upcoming ‘24’ series, which starts on March 1.

The list unveiled includes numerous combinations deemed unacceptable, such as BO24 LOK, FA24 NNY, AS24 HLE, SH24 GGY, SK24 NKZ, and PE24 VRT.

Tony stated, “Rude or humorous private plates have always been popular, and can be a lot of fun. People choose private plates like these to customise their vehicles without personalising them. Some want to shock and others want to amuse their fellow road users”.

He added, “Sometimes, the DVLA restrictions just lead to people being more creative, and trying to find rude plates that the DVLA didn’t think to ban.”

According to Plates4Less, there’s a notable interest in searches for rude or offensive words, with an average of 345 such searches occurring daily. Remarkably, the ‘C word’ emerges as the 29th most popular search, attracting around 21 searches per day, while ‘F*ck’ is searched approximately 12.42 times daily.

Tony further mentioned, “Customers use our website just to find funny plates and share them with friends, which we encourage! We even have a sharing tool built-in to make this easier.

“Outside of rude registrations, some of the most popular searches we get are names, like Sam, Dan, and Amy.”

Despite the DVLA’s stringent measures to filter out offensive plates, Plates4Less has identified a range of naughty but permissible plates such as S3XXX, OH69, FUN, OO69AAH, and PEN155. For more details, click here.
