Multi-million investment made to divert youngsters from violence this summer

The Mayor of London has unveiled a £2 million investment package aimed at diverting thousands of young people from violence during the summer holidays.

This funding will go to the mayor’s Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) and be allocated to the areas of the capital most impacted by crime.

With the support of the Mayor’s sports team and London Youth, activities are focused on not only competitive sport but physical and mental wellbeing, safety and educational and employment outcomes in areas typically underserved by sports provision.

The range of activities funded by this package includes sports, music production, mentoring, and employment opportunities.

This announcement follows the tragic deaths of two teenagers: 15-year-old Pharrell Garcia, who was fatally stabbed in east London last Tuesday, and 15-year-old Rene Graham, who was shot dead in west London on July 21.

Mayor Sadiq Khan said that tackling violence is his top priority and expressed his desire for young people “to be safe, to develop, and to thrive.”

The activities aim to support the capital’s youth during a period when they are more susceptible to exploitation and violence, according to evidence.

Research from the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (Mopac) indicates that violence affecting young people typically peaks in the summer months.

In 2023, eight teenagers were killed between June and August.
